Hi, I am Kevin Wee 黃克文. I have been practicing data analytics since 2013 and visualization (proactively) since 2019. I love the visualization of all sorts: DataViz, InfoViz, SciViz, BioViz … you name it!

Doctor in Digital Media Evaluation

I am always fascinated by how people from various backgrounds perceive and, more importantly, misperceive information from visual representations. I have a Ph.D. in digital media evaluation from Purdue University (Department of Chemistry, Chemical Education division). For my dissertation research, I developed a Tableau-based visual analytics methodology to examine how the content and design of scientific media (e.g., biomedical animations) may affect the target audience’s perceptions.

Graphing > DataViz > Visual Analytics

As a former molecular biologist, I was familiar with graphing as part of the standard scientific data analytics procedure. However, I did not fully appreciate the practice until I was introduced to Data Visualization (DataViz) at the 2017 Gordon Research Conference: Visualization in Science and Education. I have been fascinated by the intricacy of DataViz and the communities of practice ever since!

I came across Tableau software in 2019 while searching for a non-coding, easy-to-use DataViz tool for my doctoral work. I have been using the software creatively beyond research projects, including participating in datafam community challenges, such as Makeover Monday and Back 2 Viz Basics. I love designing vizzes that present meaningful stories to readers! The quality of my community challenge vizzes was recognized by Tableau, and I was chosen as one of the Tableau Public Featured Authors in 2020 (see post).

I started incorporating Figma in my visualization practice in early 2020. I have been exploring innovative ways to leverage both Figma and Tableau as a DataViz power combo. I presented on this topic several times directly and indirectly, including in a virtual Tableau User Group (TUG) workshop entitled Tableau x Figma: How to Create Modern Dashboard Background Image via Figma?

I am passionate about sharing my DataViz work and knowledge with the DataViz communities via my vizzes or social media posts (see below). My passion has brought me many recognitions from Tableau; for instance, my vizzes have been featured on the weekly DataFam RoundUp blogs, and I have been invited to present at TUG meetings as a guest speaker. In 2022, I was certified as one of the Tableau Public Ambassadors (see certification and news), enabling me to contribute to the communities on a bigger platform!

I spoke at the 2023 Tableau Conference (#data23) on the Creative Use of Images in Dashboard Design. The session has been well-received (with 314+ attendees over 200 seats). I also received the “Biggest Growth” Vizzies Award at the conference, recognizing my effort in experimenting with innovative DataViz design and sharing my knowledge with the DataFam community.

I am currently working at Discover Financial Services as the Credit BI team’s Senior Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst. I help internal partners make data-informed business decisions with my visualization, data analytics, Tableau, and Figma expertise. I also provide Tableau training and consulting to analysts across different teams.
